This is mainly an on foot tour through the town of Chania. As you walk through the maze-like streets of the old town, you will catch glimpses of its many pasts and histories. You will start with the evidence from the Bronze Age in Kydonia and follow with traces of the Iron Age, the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman cities of Antiquity. The Byzantine walls and even the almost unnoticed Byzantine Aps, are succeeded in turn by the Venetian fortification walls that are wrapped securely around Palazzos, the Jewish Ghetto, the basilica, shipyards and harbours. The Ottoman influence shows up with its hamams and minarets grafted onto earlier churches. You will also have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the local products: a foray into the Covered Market. Knossos Palace, on the outskirts of Heraklion, is the most famous most famous archaeological site on Crete. This is a tour of the mythical palace of the legendary King Minos, Princess Ariadne, the Minotaur and the Labyrinth.
Crete is home to the oldest civilization of Europe, that chronologically coexisted with ancient Egypt, Babylon, Stonehenge, the Hittites, the Mycenaeans and Biblical Moses.
The Palace excavation was mainly driven by the British Victorian Sur. Arthur Evans in the early 20th century and lasted for 30 years, and the site now covers an area of 20.000 sq.mt.

We will explore the outskirts of Rethymno and drive through the largest and oldest olive grove of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Arkadi olive grove.

We will continue to ancient Eleftherna a fantastic new museum. Eleftherna is burial site of warriors, heroes and witches on the foothills of the sacred mount Ida Psiloritis, reaching 2.456 meters above sea level.
This sacred mountain has played a major role in the branding of Crete as the land of Ancient Gods, myths and legends. The birth place of a sacred infant, later known to all as Zeus the king of the Ancient Gods of Greece. Born to Crete in the care of the goat Amalthea and nymph Melissa.This Holy mountain in antiquity with its sacred cave also delivered oracles and the sacred tablets of laws from the Gods to the people of Crete.
Eleftherna was one of the strongest cities in Western Crete rested on the foothills of the mountain and controlled the passage to the sacred cave.
During the tour you will have the opportunity to see unpublished findings on this marvelous site.
You will see the routes and travels of the brave warriors, the archers of Eleftherna into Anatolia as well as the commercial routes for imports and exports.

This is a unique site of the Era of the battle of Troy, the very first dedication to the unknown soldier so far excavated. Archangel Michael in later centuries was worshiped at the same spot.
We will then continue to visit the beautiful traditional village of Margarites one of the ancient pottery centers of Crete and you will have the chance to potter around and have something to eat under the mulberry trees in the village square.

On the way to the Monastry we will cut through the White Mountains range up to the gorge of Imbros and in the area of Sfakia. This is the closest we will get to the continent of Africa and the mythical island of the sea witch Kalypso. This areaof the western mountains of Crete played an important role during the cretan resistance on WW2. We will continue along the south coast to visit the oldest venetian fort in the island.
There is a string of villages on the way that harbored allies during the war. Up to 2000 allies managed to escape the occupying forces due to the help of the locals and monastery! The monastery of Preveli has always been a beacon in the history of the resistance of Crete against the Ottomans and up until ww2. The building is set overlooking the Libyan Coast, with it’s tranquil atmospheric character, it forms a religious site that expressed deep humanity during very difficult times…We will then conclude down to Plakias suda away from the tourist resorts to a small private beach with local tavernas…
